Amrielle by MatesLaurentiu Amrielle by MatesLaurentiu
Amrielle is a D&D half-elf ranger character. I loved to work on this one so I gave it some extra atmosphere.
I'm not that good painting horses. I rarely get to work on one and they are usually static. So I considered this good practice 'tho this was a static horse too. I experimented a bit with bloom light and I hope I got it right.

Not the best horse I've done but neither the worst. Still learning to paint animals. :)

I think you did a good job on the horse, the piece is fantastic. I like that you have her examining a track.

Glad to know you like it. It was a fun commission to work on as I don't often get to paint women. :)

I love your character drawings they're amazing, how long does it take you to do them roughly? Trying to do a character at the moment and I'm guessing it's going to take me over 20 hours just to get , it could take me well over 40 to finish completely >.<... I was daft and started with the eye and worked outward though so most of this is correcting proportions :\ blah, ahh well.

Your work is amazing! I love the lighting effect and the work you put into the clothing and adornments is just superb! :3 your pictures always strike me as very unique in the detail you put into them. Only bad thing I would say about the horse being a little out is the face as the cheeks look a little too round, they're quite flat and come down somewhat further than that I think, perhaps the nose could be a little more square as well but I think other than that, that is an excellent horse, you've got it's anatomy just right other than the face I reckon and even that doesn't detract anything particularly from the picture. all round I think it's BRILLIANT. XD

Thank you for the kind words. You shouldn't get yourself down because you didn't got it in the first try, persevering is what counts. I usually don't work on one single piece at a time since I can easily get bored and screw things up but it can take me up to 4 hours to shade a pencil piece and around 8 to 10 hours for a color piece, sometimes a little more if I get distracted but other things from the real life :P
I always use referencing when I feel I'm working on something I'm not that familiar enough and I don't often paint horses. For this reason, I'm not quite there with them but each commission with a horse in it improves my expertise. In Amrielle's case I used more than one reference and things got a bit tangled and the end result wasn't perfect by far but the client was happy and I was glad the client was happy.

One more thing - time is irrelevant. Keeping an eye on the watch while working only takes from the focus you should put in your work. I usually listen to music to put me in a mood for the image I'm working on or I listen to audio books (since nowadays I lack the time to read the real ones). Loose yourself in your work, put all the passion you can pour in it and the results will come.

;) more than the first try but the first real try, using an art magazine to help me out at the moment and it's really working I think.
Not a bad time scale! I think distraction is the bane of my art work I have about 6 to 8 pieces on the go at the moment and more threatening to take my attention too... and then theres dungeons and dragons, always a time consuming hobby. heh heh.

I don't use references very often, I probably should start! I think the pose you chose was a pretty tricky one I was actually looking for a horse with it's head facing forward and it was nearly impossible to find,

Very wise words, I will try and not think about the time so much in future, I do put on music but it has the time it takes to get through the play list which makes me rather aware of time passing, I will do my best to ignore it though, thanks for the advice! I look forward to seeing more of your brilliant work :)

black hair, green eyes yep she reminds me of Arya from Eragon

The actress in Eragon was a redhead if I remember correctly. To be honest I didn't thought at all about Aria or Eragon while working on this. The description for her was rather simple and to the point.

well most movies made after books are non-accurate to the story line in the books

I've read the books too, ate least the ones that were published. The movie was nasty. As for the books... they improved somewhat from volume to volume 'tho if you want to read fantasy I would recommend the "Magic the Gathering" series. Those are some dark and twisted characters in there, lots of personality and they stuck with you.

I thought the movie was bad too. it was too short due to them just changing a lot of things to help the characters. Also, thanks for the recommdemnation for that series. I'll look into it.
